With our electronic devices and synthetic lights, it can be easy to forget our natural cycles. Yet, absorbing some natural light is essential for our body, mind, and heart (Kokoro). It helps us to: destress; mitigate depression and insomnia; boost new cell growth as well as our immune system; balance our hormones; heal and reduces our pain; while stimulating hair and bone growth.
It Felt Love
Did the rose
Ever open its heart
And give to this world
It felt the encouragement of light
We all remain
The insight of this 14-century Sufi-poet can teach us a lot about our relationship with the sun. Light is the key to our innate flourishing souls. It is inextricable from our being.
The further away from the equator we live, the more we stay indoors, and the older, tired, heavier, stressed, and darker-skinned we are, the more we need to be concerned that we are getting enough sunlight. When we strive to receive natural light for just 20-30 minutes per day (which is safe to do without sunscreen & even from a window), we help optimize our Kokoro.
